This is a Florida estate auction find I stumbled on last week. It’s a large old Silvertone electric cutaway guitar with a great colorful art deco headstock veneer! I’m pretty sure that it dates back to the 1950’s but I’m not sure what model this guitar is? In doing some internet research, perhaps it’s model 1365 although I will gladly post any informed emails I receive? Internet web sites indicate that these guitars were apparently made by Kay for the Silvertone brand? The very first examples of this particular Silvertone model featured what experts refer to as the distinctive “coat of arms” headstock which this guitar has! It’s VERY regal looking.
I’m pretty sure that the guitar is completely original but, if I learn differently, I will post a correction. It has the original Kluson Deluxe “single line” tuning pegs but the plastic buttons have long since deteriorated. Also it is missing the bridge. As such, I was not able to string up the guitar so I’m listing it as a project although these both seem to be quite easy fixes. The body is a large 17 inches at the lower bout with a nice nickel plated tail piece! The body is bound on the top AND back. No issues with the binding…all intact. There are assorted age appropriate nicks & scuffs but otherwise the guitar has not been damaged or repaired anywhere that I can see. There are 2 pick-ups which work (I tested them by plugging the guitar into an amplifier and gently tapping them with a screw driver). The only ink stamped marking I could see inside one of the f-holes says “P4”. The uniquely shaped pick guard with the large S logo is very cool and complements the art deco head stock!
The guitar did not come with any case. However, I have a newer hard case that might fit and I would consider offering it to the winning bidder if desired and we can agree on a low price. In any event, I am somewhat obsessive about careful packing so it will be packed securely for shipping (with or without a case!).
Here’s a link to what appears to be a similar model listed on Ebay recently: http://cgi.ebay.com/1950-s-SILVERTONE-KAY-ARISTOCRAT-1452-1365-1371-/150462078637?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Guitar&hash=item23083d1ead
