Amazing Vintage Silvertone/Kay Jazz Box w/OHSC!

17" Archtop, "Speed Bump" Pickups, "Cupcake" Knobs!

Wow, what an incredible survivor: a 50-something year old Silvertone Model 1372 in natural Blond finish with original case! Most likely manufactured by the Chicago based Kay Musical Instrument Company, this beauty plays smoothly and sounds as sweet as she looks. First available in Spring/Summer of 1957, this model was only listed in the Fall/Winter 1958 Sears catalog. Many thanks to Randy Holmes of Silvertone World for identifying this guitar! Be sure to check out www.silvertoneworld.com for the most comprehensive information about these great old guitars you can find. Features such as the "speed bump" pickups, "cupcake" control knobs, and pointed headstock make this vintage archtop almost certainly Kay-made. Other features include multi-bound top and back, bound rosewood neck with large block inlay, raised white pickguard with etched logo, adjustable rosewood bridge, and black-faced headstock. The serial number is ink-stamped inside the sound hole, but it didn't help date the guitar. No date code was visible on the pots, and I didn't drop them to look more closely because I did not want to disturb them.

Overall condition of this late 1950's Silvertone is truly remarkable. The spruce top has a few tiny blemishes but is otherwise very clean. While the maple back has some lovely "flame", the neck and headstock are exceptionally so, my photos do not even begin to show it. Some finish wear on the back of the neck at the the first few frets is a welcome sight, the sign of a fun-to-play axe. A newer nut and the plastic jack cover plate may be the only non-original features, the plate was a common add-on for reinforcement, and this one appears to have been in place for a good while. There is a fairly common slight separation of the body binding at the treble waist, a result of shrinkage, but it is stable, and otherwise the bindings are in terrific condition, nicely mellowed in color. The Kluson Deluxe three-on-a-plate tuners and chrome-plated hardware are in excellent condition, and the controls, switch, and electronics all work smoothly and correctly. This model has a steel rod-reinforced neck, but it is not adjustable. The 19-fret neck is nice and straight until about the 14th-15th fret, where it starts to bow down slightly. While it is certainly playable from 15-19, I don't think you're really gonna be up there that often. The original case is also in great condition, especially for a soft, chipboard case. The exterior is clean and solid, and the "plush" interior lining is extra nice. The case pocket even still has the fabric pull attached. This guitar should be hung on the wall to be admired when it is not being played, it is that pretty. You would be very hard-pressed to find another in this condition both cosmetically and functionally.
