This is a very cool vintage Silvertone U1 I inherited from an uncle who bought it straight out of the Sears catalog back in the day. It appears to be a 1956 based on the single-cut design, coke-bottle headstock and my best guess at the blurry date code inside. It plays great and sounds crisp and twangy, just like it should. Volume and tone pots are a little scratchy, but in good working order. Tuners are smooth and hold well. There are two non-original things to note: 1. the original plastic strap lug at the bridge end of the guitar broke off, and has been replaced with a modern aluminum one (pic #6) 2. the string slots on the nut have been filed out slightly (see pic #5) -- this doesn't affect tuning or playability in any way, but it is not the way they came. Other than that, there are the normal cosmetic issues typical of a 50+ year old guitar that has been played -- numerous small nicks, scratches and rub marks, but all quite small. The only notable one is one the back of the neck (pic #8). The masonite is in good shape all around, and the 'wallpaper' on the sides is also completely intact. It's no 'closet queen', but it looks good, sounds good and has vibe for days. I wish I played more in a style that suited it, but I'm more of a classical player, so it's off to someone who can appreciate a true vintage Silvertone. Let me know if you have any questions -- NO RESERVE!
