This is an excellent-condition vintage Silvertone Lap steel.
Pickup cover shows darkening from player's hand, but NO finish or plating has worn off anywhere on the pickup or the rest of the instrument.

  • Original sparkle amber tuning pegs -- all straight and smooth (I have only fooled with a couple of them, but they worked smoothly).
  • Even the flocking/felt on the back shows very little wear -- not worn through anywhere.
  • No sign of crumbling on the knobs or tuners
  • Nice loud output and the kind of classic tone you used to hear in the old C&W artists like Merrill Moore.
  • The Serial number plater says T11947.  I haven't been able to find a good source for dating via serial number, but I have seen a couple of these with serial numbers beginning "14xxx" and dated in the 1950s, so I guess this is a little earlier, but I don't know by how much.
  • The case is in very good shape, inside and out; all intact, very little road wear, even the binding is intact and shows very little scuffing.

The strings have got to be fifteen years old, and it sounds good to me (as a non-steel player who mucked around with it a couple of times).  It would probably sound even better with a decent set of new wires.
I'll be happy to honor requests for other pictures and (as much as I can supply) further information.
