When
I bought this Jupiter several years ago, its was played and clapped-out.
It’s
a good example of one, and not abused, but the fretboard wear from decades of
playing was some of the worst I have seen.
I spent a lot of time on it as a
project, and sorted out a problem jack, and spinning (loose) selector switch.
The pots were lubed and cleaned as was the switch and jack, and a noninvasive tailpiece
ground was added. (a huge improvement if you record or play live shows)
It
sounded so good, that I eventually restored the original fretboard in a lasting
manor, in a repair technique spanning several weeks/months!
The problem areas
(divets/holes) were razor cut with the grain, and old harmony brazillian
rosewood that Id saved from previous refrets/ fretboard leveling was
incorporated and catalyzed. This was a good opportunity to reglue and level the
aged fretmarker blocks as well, so the fretboard is now a joy to play on, and
better than most Harmony block-inlayed guitars (they always lift and shrink,
and catch your fingertips, but not on this one)
The
headstock logo was removed at some point in its life, and had the finish
touched up on the upper top of the headstock, behind where the logo is. I
installed a logo from an old Jupiter project neck, so it now has the correct
logo.
It
sounds great, and the pickups both have good output. There are no cracks or
funky repairs, and the jack area is secure, with no stress cracks.
Decades
of regular playing make this guitar a gem. It resonates and sustains well, and
it almost tunes itself, if you know what I mean (wood/grain memory finds
proper-pitch tuning)
I
had an honest-to-goodness ebony bridge made in exacting specs of the original
bridge, and its helped the already great tone shine a bit more.
Its
not the cleanest Jupiter out there, but it’s got to be one of the most-played,
well-aged ones, and harbors an immeasurable vastness of mojo!
