Silvertone Hornet bass guitar, model 1442L. Circa 1967. Short scale, weighs just 6 lbs 10 oz!!
One of the last models made for Sears by the original Danelectro company in New Jersey USA, just prior to going out of business.
One very cool and not commonly know feature - this has tilt neck feature in the 3 bolt neck plate style that was later used (and maybe copied?) by Fender. It is fully functional and effective on this bass, it enabled me to set it up with very low action without having to run the bridge down into the body.
Also includes original bridge cover, which is quite ofter missing from these.
Here's an excerpt from the original description from the 1967 Sears catalog:
Steel strings close-set on slimmest possible neck for fast fingering .. neck steel reinforced, with rosewood fingerboard and 22-fret scale, inlaid position markers. Adjustable bridge. Selected hardwood body.
Standard size, single pickup. Full 30-inch scale; bass-treble emphasis switch, tone and volume controls. Size 1 3/8 x 13 1/2 x 44 1/2 inches long. Shaded brown.
57 G 1442L--Wt. 27 lbs. $5 monthly .... Cash $79.95
As listed in the original catalog description above, these basses do not have a truss rod - the necks are reinforced with a T-shaped bar running the length of the neck. If the instrument was not abused in it's lifetime the necks retain very good straightness, and this one is like that. The action is quite low, and I'm a stickler for low action.
Fantastic sounding original lipstick pickup measures 3.67K.
Typical edge wear on body in places where it would have rested, and one crack at typical stress point at end of pickguard (see pics) - otherwise fine overall condition for a 44 year old vintage American-made instrument.
Selector switch was broken when I received it (as is most often the case, all vintage Danos I've purchased on Ebay have had bad original switches) - I locally sourced a NOS ON-OFF-ON switch of higher quality and installed it. All original otherwise.
Has brand new light gauge GHS flatwound strings, it came with the original (probably) extra-light roundwounds that were extremely rusted and corroded. This thing sounds amazing now, with great playability over the entire neck.
Will ship well packed in an aftermarket gig bag. US and Worldwide shipping calculated.
