Very Rare 1959 Silvertone 1425
As you likely know, the late 50s and early 60s Kay's and Silvertone's are outstanding instruments. They were built with all solid woods, cloth wiring, hot pickups, and many other features that rivaled even the most expensive American-made guitars of the same era. Naturally though, the quality tended to be inconsistent. Many of this same model have their finish nearly entirely chipped off, are dulled past the point of bringing a shine back into it, and have necks that are too big to play comfortably. Not to mention that the neck heels tended to lift after just a few years, giving the guitar an awful neck angle and rendering it useful only for slide playing and cowboy chords. This particular Silvertone is one fine exception.
Structure: No cracks or repaired cracks, top and back arch are perfect with no sagging, bracing is great, no binding is chipping or pulling away, the neck angle is beautiful, no neck heel lift whatsoever.
Neck: The neck is one of this guitar's best features. It's always a gamble to buy an old guitar with no truss rod. This neck sat without string tension for all its life until just a few years ago. The neck is dead-on straight when lined up with a level. The neck is not a baseball bat. It is similar in neck profile to a Harmony Rocket. Very slim and fast all the way up to the cutaway. Frets have zero wear.
Body: 17" jumbo shape. Feels wonderful in your arms. Features beautiful A-grade flame maple back and sides with a resonant adirondack top.
Finish: The finish has checked beautifully and tastefully. It is not nearly as checked as many that I have seen/owned, but it has enough checking to give it that warm, vintage vibe that is crucial to the mojo for these old Silvertone's. The finish is high gloss and has not faded or dulled whatsoever. It is as shiny as a mirror and has not been altered in any way.
Setup: Done last week by Hendersonville Guitar Repair in Hendersonville, TN. The action sits quite comfortably with no fret buzz at .09" at the 12th fret on the bass side and .07" on the treble side. Thanks to the great neck angle, the bridge has room to go up or down to adjust action to player preferences. It has 10's on it currently. The intonation is superb and the strings resonate for days.
Electronics: These old Kay "Speed bump" pickups have a tone that cannot be mistaken for anything. When cranked up they bite like a fat P-90, when rolled down they offer smooth, jazzy tones that will take you all the way back to 1959! The pots are clean, as is the switch. No scratching or dead spots.
Recent work: Setup, full polish and cleaning, electronics cleaned to eliminate scratching and dead spots, and fingerboard treated.
Includes original hardshell case and original Hamilton capo. All of the case latches are in complete working order and the case is in good cosmetic shape and perfect structural shape. Capo works like new.
This guitar is 100% original, aside from the strap button which was professionally added to the neck heel years ago. Nothing is missing or damaged.
This guitar is located in the Hendersonville, TN area.
